"Say Something"

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

This song goes with the book because when Janie is with Jody at first she would’ve followed him anywhere, which she did. She follows him to Eatonville but after awhile she realizes that she doesn’t really know much about Jody. Even before Jody died she kind of gave up on the love that she once had for him.

"Titanium"

You shout it out
But I can't hear a word you say
I'm talking loud not saying much
I'm criticized
But all your bullets ricochet
Shoot me down, but I get up

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away

You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium

Cut me down
But it's you who'll have further to fall
Ghost town and haunted love
Raise your voice, sticks and stones may break my bones
I'm talking loud not saying much

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim

You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium

Stone-hard, machine gun
Firing at the ones who run
Stone-hard as bulletproof glass

This song is related to the book because Janie is kind of bulletproof. No matter how many times Jody is mean to Janie she still gets back up. Also she feels like their love is not right and when he hits her she still gets back up every time.

"You Are More"

There's a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she's wandered
And the shame she can't hide

She says, "How did I get here?
I'm not who I once was.
And I'm crippled by the fear
That I've fallen too far to love"

But don't you know who you are,
What's been done for you?
Yeah don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

Well she tries to believe it
That she's been given new life
But she can't shake the feeling
That it's not true tonight

She knows all the answers
And she's rehearsed all the lines
And so she'll try to do better
But then she's too weak to try

But don't you know who you are?

'Cause this is not about what you've done,
But what's been done for you.
This is not about where you've been,
But where your brokenness brings you to

This is not about what you feel,
But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved.

This song is related to the book because Janie is haunted by the mistakes that she has made in the past. By the time that she met Tea Cake she had made a lot of mistakes regarding her choice in men. And in the end she only needs God and nobody else.

"Home"

Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave (wave) is stringing us along
Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
You get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

This song is related to the book because as Janie is following Jody and Tea Cake she is holding on to them as they go. Both Jody and Tea Cake are trying to make Janie comfortable and to find a place for them to call home. Although only Tea Cake makers her feel at home she thought that she would find that with Jody as well.

"Dare You To Move"

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next
What happens next

[Chorus]
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
Tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

This song relates to the book because Janie needs to move and get out of the situation that she is in because it is not good. Also there is a lot of tension between her and her two husbands. Also when Jody and her are starting to fight more they have many fallingouts.

"Praise You In This Storm"

I was sure by now
God You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining

As the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

And I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when
I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to you
And you raised me up again
My strength is almost gone
How can I carry on
If I can't find You

But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

This song relates to the book because when the hurricane comes in they are looking to God to help them through it. And when the worst part comes in they are praying to God to help them through this. And during the storm they knew that God was with them.

"The Rescue"

Have you ever lost your way,
Getting by with no direction.
Living always so afraid,
Of the fear that fills your mind.
And you could go on and on and on like this,
But you'll never find that peace exists.
You don't have to be, you don't have to be alone.
There's a better way, it's never to late to say,
-
I need You right now,
Here in this moment,
I'm losing ground,
Can't keep going,
I'm calling out,
For You to rescue me.
Don't want to drown right now,
Here in this ocean,
I'm so far down,
Can't keep moving.
This time around,
I'm keeping my eyes on You.
You are the rescued,

You are the rescued.

Is it hard to find your words?
To say what you've been thinking?
Have you taken whats not yours?
Running by your desperation.
You could go on and on and on like this,
But you'll never find a love like His.
You don't have to be, you don't have to be alone.
Oh.

This song relates to the book because when she is with Jody she could not keep going the way that she was going because that is not a very good way to live. The way that she is going she will never be able to find peace and she will feel alone. She is calling out for someone to help her through her marriage with Jody.

"What I’ve been looking for"

It's hard to believe that I couldn't see
You were always there beside me
Thought I was alone, with no one to hold
But you were always right beside me
This feeling's like no other
I want you to know

I've never had someone that knows me like you do
The way you do
I've never had someone as good for me as you
No one like you
So lonely before I finally found
What I've been looking for

So good to be seen, so good to be heard
Don't have to say a word
So long I was lost, so good to be found
I'm loving having you around
This feeling's like no other
I want you to know

This song relates to the book because when Janie meets Tea Cake she feels like she finally knows what love truly is. She feels like her past husbands didn’t really know her all that well but when she found Tea Cake she felt like she now knew what love is truly about and she has found what she has been looking for.

"Circles"

[Verse 1:]
Ready, set, go
This is take 37, let it roll
I'm gonna get it right this time
Gonna fight this time
This time I'm for real
Look at me go
I'm off, flying straight as an arrow
Then I feel the wind blowin', gravity sets in
And I don't know how to deal
I always start so strong...

[Chorus:]
Before you even know it
I'm right back at the start
Doing what I hate
And breaking my own heart
I'm going back and forth
And forth and back
And then round in circles
I was never meant to travel on my own
So no matter what I try, I'm trying alone
I'm going back and forth
And forth and then back
And then round in circles
(Round, round, round, round)
Round in circles
(Round, round, round, round)
Round in circles

[Verse 2:]
Here's what I know
Direction goes out the window
The second that I hear Your word
I forget what I heard and go on just the same
(Go on just the same)
But the beautiful part: it doesn't have to be this hard
I'm just deceiving myself
I know I need Your help
Something's got to change
I know I need a change, because...

  No more insanity
I'm letting go of me
All this independence has made me dizzy
And now I can't see where I'm supposed to be
I had my turn and now my lesson's learned
I touched the fire and I got burned
I need Your healing touch
I've had enough
                                             I'm tired of saying

This song is related to the book because Janie keeps going around and around in her thoughts about men first she likes her first husband a little bit but then she doesn’t. Then she loves Jody and then she stops liking him and then she loves Tea Cake. Each time she thinks that she is going to get it right but she just keeps going back and forth and in the end she realizes that she just needs God and not a man.

"Give Your Heart A Break"

The day I first met you
You told me you'd never fall in love
But now that I get you
I know fear is what it really was

Now here we are,
So close yet so far.
Haven't I passed the test?
When will you realize,
Baby, I'm not like the rest?

Don't wanna break your heart
Wanna give your heart a break
I know you're scared it's wrong
Like you might make a mistake
There's just one life to live
And there's no time to wait, to wait
So let me give your heart a break, give your heart a break
Let me give your heart a break, your heart a break
There's just so much you can take
Give your heart a break
Let me give your heart a break, your heart a break
Oh yeah, yeah

On Sunday you went home alone
There were tears in your eyes
I called your cell phone, my love
But you did not reply

The world is ours. If we want it,
We can take it if you just take my hand.
There's no turning back now.
Baby, try to understand

When your lips are on my lips
Then our hearts beat as one
But you slip out of my fingertips
Every time you run, whoa-oh-whoa-oh-oh

'Cause you've been hurt before
I can see it in your eyes
You try to smile it away, some things you can't disguise
Don't wanna break your heart
Baby, I can ease the ache, the ache

This song is related to the book because when Janie and Tea Cake first meet Tea Cake can tell that her heart has been broken plenty of times. Tea Cake is trying to show her that he is for real and doesn’t just want her money or anything. Tea Cake also thinks that he can ease the ache that is in her heart and in the end he does.

"Breakaway"

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

This song is related to the book because Janie is a girl from a small town that wants to get out and just experience other things. Even though she doesn’t want to forget her loved ones or anything she wants to get out and see other things that are more interesting than the town that she lived in.

"Only You"

Take my heart, I Lay it down
At the feet of you whose crowned
Take my life, I'm letting go
I lift it upto You who's throned

And I will worship You, Lord
Only You, Lord
And I will bow down before You
Only You Lord

Take my fret, take my fear
All I have, I'm leaving here
Be all my hopes, be all my dreams
Be all my delights, be my everything

And It's just you and me here now
Only you and me here now

You should see the view
When it's only You

In the end after everything that happens with Tea Cake for some reason I just see Janie singing this. I see her praising God with this song because it is saying that she wont be so focused on having a man but she will be focused on God and nothing else.
